Pit Bull Health: Dog Supplements
By Jason Mann
I was first introduced to dog supplements a little over 4 years ago and since then I have used one supplement or another in my girls food.
Primarily I like to use oils mixed with an all natural raw diet and then I add all natural vitamin supplements like vitamin C to their food as well.
Call me paranoid or even selfish but isn't a long, healthy life with our dogs worth going the extra effort?
Recommended Supplements and Why Would You Want to Use Them?
Why would you want to use supplements?
Supplements come in handy for a number of reasons. One of the most important reasons I can think of is the fact that dog food lacks a lot of nutrition despite what that crafty label on the side tells us.
Other reasons include quicker recovery from hard exercise common with the breed. Supplements can help dogs recover from illness faster (as with Vitamin C) and others help the coat (Vitamin E).
Of particular importance to Pit Bulls and you are the supplements that help recovery, illness, coat, and joints. Joint problems in todays Pit Bull are becoming an epidemic it seems as breeders pump dog after dog out without regards to their overall health and structure issues.
For this reason you will find supplements that I recommend that deal with these Pit Bull specific health areas.
Currently I only recommend a few supplements. If you're like me, you like to keep it simple.
Supplements I recommend:
-
One supplement I highly recommend is the
K9Maxx Dog Supplement
K9Maxx offers a well rounded supplement containing, glucosamine, siberian ginseng, brewer's yeast and a combination of vitamins and minerals. While I'm not to fond of the brewer's yeast the health benefits of this supplement are numerous.
You can put in food, give by mouth or dissolve in water. Which of course I like because I like to have options. My girls are picky! :o)
- Pet Nutrition Products offers Healthy Joints Glucosamine / Vitamin C™ a supplement that combines Glucosamine and Vitamins C into a healthy little chewable tablets.
Pit Bulls and Supplements Conclusion
Supplements offer a way to give your dog some extra nutrients and things they won't get from dog food (like Vitamin C).
While I don't recommend getting to crazy over supplements because they work differently for specific dogs adding a few specific supplements to your Pit Bulls diet is beneficial.
From time to time I will be adding more supplements to this page as I discover them.
In short, supplements work, but only with consistent usage and always consult a vet before starting your dog on any new supplements or exercise programs.
