Articles of pit bull attacks or what most people don’t care to see

January 19th, 2005

You know the thing that burns my chaps about articles of Pit Bull attacks is they usually toss in a little blurb that tells the whole story.

For example I was recently reading an article where a child here in Kentucky was mauled by a Pit Bull and had severe injuries to her head and face. The story, as usual, only made a passing note the child was left alone with the dog that had been chained up it’s entire life in the backyard.

I ask you, do you think that dog was stable?

What people fail to realize is if you take a high energy, super athletic animal and chain it up for years that animal is bound to have some sort of problem. I feel extremely sad for those pit bulls that are treated in this manner.

Next time you are reading an article about a Pit Bull attack pay close attention, I would be willing to be dollar doughnuts one of these things is mentioned:

1. Child left completely alone with the dog. Even it’s a indoor dog and trusted, small children should never be left alone with them.

2. The dog was chained up outside for long periods or otherwise neglected.

3. It is NOT an American Pit Bull Terrier but a mix or completely different breed.

You will also see these things mentioned quickly as if they didn’t have any bearing on the accident or the story.

In short, the majority of Pit Bull attacks are either false or a person was responsible for the accident.

Take care,
Jason and the girls.

What gets me is how the media (at least here in Florida, it seems) make it a point to mention the breed of the dog in a Pit Bull attack whereas any other dog attack is simply labeled “Dog Attack”. No wonder they get such a bad rep.

I was very saddened today to hear of the death of a 12 yr old boy in San Francisco who was killed by the family’s 2 pet pit bulls. I am saddened for the family and I am saddened for the plight of the pit bull as a “breed” This boy was either home alone with the dogs, (not all the facts are in yet) or was at least alone in his room with the dogs. What happened, did he unknowingly do something to provoke one of the dogs? We may never know and his family will be tortured for the rest of their lives by the question of what went wrong. I work in an animal shelter and have seen many of these dogs come throught our facility. By and large we do not put them up for adoption. The final disposition for them is euthanasia, even the puppies. I am saddened that these dogs have gotton into the hands of the wrong people and that there is such a stigma attached to them. Many of them are simply wonderful dogs and I think they are special. Iwould much rather vaccinate or microchip a “pit bull” or a Rottie, or a Doberman than any of the toy breeds–they scare me more!! Unfortunately, when it is a bully breed that attacks, it is splashed allover the media big time. Any dog has the propensity to be dangerous, after all, they are animals, almost all are predatory to a degree, and they have teeth!! Lots of them! We, as the more intelligent of the species?? have to do our part in being responsible pet owners and breeders. I fear for the future of the bully breeds.

I am torn on how I feel about the pit bull breed. I own a female Bull Terrier and a male American Bulldog, both are great dogs. However I know what they are capable of and would never set them up to fail. On the other hand, I am almost getting tired of defending the breed! Yeah, I agree that the media doesn’t recognize the breeds of other dog attacks. But on the other hand most other dog types don’t attack with the intention to KILL and not stop till the job is done!! I do understand that any and all dogs have the capability of doing damage, but comm’on people let’s stop being stupid about this. We have all seen pictures and or seen first hand what a pit can do and we all can plainly see that these dogs are not like other dogs!! I am not bashing the breed but I am tired of hearing people make self righteous excuses for them. It won’t be long before they are banned everywhere, I guarantee that! Everybody knows that there is not any other breed that could give a pit a run for it’s money when it comes to a fight and that is why 99.9% of people are attracted to them.

JD: It’s ill bred backyard dogs and commercial profit dogs that are causing the damage. Profit puppies that have unsound temperaments by breeders who would sell their kids for a nice car or one more “toy” do more damage than anything else.

We also have to remember there is only ONE Pit Bull. And that is the American Pit Bull Terrier. Everything else is either a mix, or another breed altogether. The Amstaff could also be called a Pit Bull because the foundation of that line was started from American Pit Bull Terriers. But that’s about as far as I would go using the term “Pit Bull” to describe my breed. A correct APBT will never bite a person. Ever. Friend or foe they should except them as if they knew them their whole lives. If not, that is an unsound dog.

How can you say you are more scared of the toy breeds? YOU ARE AN IDIOT!! When was the last time you heard of a pug mauling someone? If a rottie, pitt or dobey attacks you have something to be worried about! If a toy poodle attacks me I’d kick a field goal with it! It is a good thing you chose to remain anonymous. If I was a dumb as you, I would have too!

Jason, Iknow that it’s the peoples fault for ill bred dogs, but I also know that if I ill breed labs I am not going to have many problems. And I’m not talking just about hurting people. I am also talking about flat out dog aggression! I used to own a border collie that was the sweetest dog I have ever owned, I was playng frisbee with it in a park one day and all of the sudden a pitt-type dog charged out of no where for absolutely no reason and started mauling my little collie,I grabbed the pit by scruff of the neck and lifted him up and squeezed the hell out of his throat until he let go. Luckily some other people were there to help me out and restrain the dog until I could put mine back into my truck!! Again, I love the pitt bull I just get tired of hearing people talk like they are the sweetest dogs in the world and you should never have anything to worry about if you are a responnsible owner!!! Be it a pitt, am staff or staffordshire bull terrier. Cause when you get right down to it, most good dog owners aren’t the ones who want to own a Pitt-Bull type! I know this for a fact. I live in a not so good part of town and every stupid thug or wanna -be owns a pitt-type dog and they think it is cool to let be mean and lunge at everybody that walks by. So the good dog people don’t want to be looked at like an ignorant thug so they pick other breeds to own.

i kno that this comment page was from a while back, but this kid that keep writin bout pits n puttin them down, but then again sits there and tells us that he loves them. i own a 6 month old female put and she is the second pit i have owned, i am only 20 and kno that APBTs r one of the hardest breeds to own. NOT because they are the smartest dogs i think around… but because of the way that everyone looks at them. and yes i am not from the “nice” area of town, and i DO kno many people that own pits and many of them. they treat them like their kids n they dont think its cool to let their dogs lunge at people or growl or bark. mainly the dogs that bark alot is cause they hear someone walkin by the house they sit inside listenin to people go by THEIR house door… with their tail waggin they bark. its just mainly the owners AND the people that criticize the dog breed that need to get checked up on.
