Pit Bulls and Breed Specific Legislation
October 16th, 2005
I’d like to share a story with you today about Pit Bulls and Breed Specific Legislation.
The story is about Stephanie Ascott a woman who lives in Canada. Hearing Stephanie’s story is heartbreaking for several reasons. It made me ask out loud, why do good people end up getting the shaft so often?
You see, Stephanie had her leg amputated. Her marriage ended. She was demoted at her job and lost her home.
All of this happened rapidly and Stephanie fell into a depression.
One cold night her son brought her a dog he had found as a stray. Stephanie took his little frozen body and put it in front of a stove and rubbed feeling and warmth back into him.
She thought he was a little Chihuahua so she named him TACO.
It later turned out that TACO was non-other than a little Pit Bull puppy.
You may have heard that Canada has recently banned Pit Bulls. Well TACO is one of those in jeopardy and Stephanie has repeatedly been silenced and she hasn’t even had the right to plead her case in front of any goverment officials.
When she was allowed in front of a group to speak 5 out of 4 voted to hear her plea. However, Mayor Eddie Francis stepped in and voted against her making the vote 5-5. In Canada a tie is a loss and her plea was not heard.
No one has been allowed to speak out against By-Law #245. And a large part of that is Mayor Francis and his repeated votes against those wishing to oppose the by-law.
Stephanie’s story doesn’t end there.
Remember she had her leg amputated?
As a result of this she had to learn how to walk all over again.
Taco, by some “grand universal plan” stepped in and helped her learn to walk again. He also helped her with her depression by being there for her when she felt down.
Despite her situation and her pleas to the goverment they ordered her to turn Taco over to the Windsor Essex County Humane Society.
Are these people for real?
Compassion is obviously a foriegn word to the Government of Canda.
Oh, I won’t hold my tongue here and my contempt for the PEOPLE of Canada either.
For it is YOUR fault the law is passed and Taco and Stephanie are where they are.
It is YOUR fault the man who commented on the previous story was beaten and when his dog tried to protect him they arrested him and took his dog.
Am I crazy or does this seem like Nazi Germany or some third world dictatorship?
Am I crazy or do people not care anymore as long as it doesn’t effect them?
Am I crazy or are the people who sit there and eat what the TV and Media feeds them like they are eating a fancy dinner sitting on their butts doing nothing?
Why are we allowing the governments of the United States and Canada to treat us like criminals and force laws that are unrealistic, biased, and fear driven on us?
Personally I’m fed up. I will start to strike out before the storm of BSL hits and I will make every effort to make a change.
It’s time for us to raise up our voices and demand to be heard.
Writing letters, protesting on the steps of government buildings, going door to door to spread the word that people are being presecuted by their governments, all of these are ways to get our voices heard.
I will close this article with a question.
Will you allow them to walk all over you or will you stand up and raise your voice?!
Best Regards,
Jason, Angel and Honey

I can’t even try to explain how much the new bylaw in Ontario angers me. I am a pit owner who has done all that one preson can do for responsible ownership. I live in a small community and have been very active with the fight against Bill 132. Now that the law has been passed, I have to muzzle my pup, who by the way would not hurt a fly, he is such a sucky. On top of all of this, I contacted our local by law enforcement and asked that since they have to re write our by laws for our town why not include that all dogs within the Bracebridge Ontario community have their dogs muzzled and leashed in public. The reason for me asking is that if I am to abide by these god awful rules, why not have it for all dog owners that have their dogs in public. It would not be so bad if all owners were asked to do this, but to point a finger at one specific breed is absolutely crazy. The response I got was that if our town was going to change the by laws to include what I was requesting, it would have been done along time ago. I just could not believe that this so called officer just did not want to even think of passing a by law that would make it a little more fare for all dog owners and not just make it harder for owners like myself. This just goes to show how cowardly people really are. I have not taken my dog into my town since the by law has come into play as I am afraid for his safety and mine. People are ignorant and god only knows what people will do. I thank god that I live out of town so that my dog can still have a good home life, but for those who live within towns and cities that own these great dogs, I feel for you and your pet. I have written numerous letters to our government and have written to our paper. It was printed which made me very happy. I wanted people to know some truths about these great dogs. Its amazing how little people really know about the breed. I have a local pet store carying a petition that I have sent people to fill out and I have continued to forward to the Band Aide Coalition as they are fighting Bill 132 in Canada/Ontario. Please dont give up the fight. Fight, Fight , Fight. With out us fighting and making our voices heard, this great breed of dog will be no longer. Hell the original American Pit Bull Terrier is almost gone now. What will happen ten years down the road???? If you dont fight then dont complain when the government is after your family pet/companion, because your are part of the problem and not part of the solution. You need to make your voice heard and do something about it.
Hi I,m Canadain and I hate this pit bull bull shit there a great breed but the gov wont listen
i hate the band and i own two pit bulls there the smartest dog i ever owned and i beleve its the owner not the breedwhy shoud we pay the price and ant we got the grandfathers act freedom its fuckin RETARDED
stupid law my dogs are friendly harmless thank lets be herd
Anyone, and I mean anyone, who owns a pit-bull clearly has an emotional, physical, or psychological deficiency.
Just read the common press, that is if you can read, and you’ll quickly realize what a disgusting animal the pit bull really is. It’s interesting that in almost every case of pit bull mauling of infant, child or adult, the owner claims that the animal has never demonstrated any violent behavior prior to the event in question. Horse-shit!!
Given that the pit-bull is the weapon of choice of drug dealers and pimps, it’s little wonder that the low I.Q. assholes who bring this breed into otherwise safe neighborhoods would make this baseless claim.
I hope all of pit-bull owners fall victims to your piece of crap “pets” you deserve whatever you get.
DIE-PIT-BULLS-DIE
This is to Brian. Common press? Get real man. Get a life.
And learn something about what you are talking about before you shoot your mouth off. Oh wait, you are an idiot. Idiots don’t get the facts from both sides and draw their own conclusion.
They eat media information, Mcdonalds, and buy what the TV tells them they need to buy. I am not a drug dealer. I am not a thug.
I am a law abiding citizen who owns two businesses, pays my taxes, supports my nation in their retarded ways, and puts up with idiots like you on a daily basis.
Your lack of knowledge and your comments are a perfect example of a brain dead person who eats the crap they are fed by the mainstream media and society.
This is to Jason. First off get your facts straight by-law 245 is
for Ontario only not all of Canada. Now to all. I just want to make it known I don’t have anything against pitt-bulls in general, but if you really honestly think about it what is more important? A persons
life and safety or your being able to keep a dog. Yes, I know it is the odd pitt-bull that does attack and usually because it is mistreated by some unhumane person and everyone gets effected by it. So if your that much of a die-hard move to another province or else suck it up and get a different breed of dog, I’m sure you will love it just as much and if you don’t because of the breed then I would say your “dog prejudice”. I will also add that singling out just one breed of dog is not right because potentially any dog is at risk, but better safe than sorry and it has to start somewhere stopping the risk. No Offence ment to anyone, but if I did offend someone my apologies. Later
This is to Cody.
I know that law 245 is not all of Canada. However, it is IN Canada and it’s a matter of time before it spreads. America was first with BSL and I’ve seen how it works.
So your logic is, ban HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of dogs and force people who have loving pets to get rid of them or move out of the area they love so much because of it to stop only the odd (your words) Pit Bull that does attack.
You admit it’s the odd Pit Bull and most of the time it has been mistreated. Yet you agree with making law abiding citizens pay for someone elses mistakes.
That doesn’t make sense to me. And you know what, the people who don’t care about their dogs DO go to another breed, and it attacks because they were not held accountable for their previous actions.
That is the problem Cody. Lazy governments afraid to blame PEOPLE for their ACTIONS. Instead they blame a DOG that is under the care of a person.
It lumps (unfairly I might add) a group of people into one catagory even though 99.9% of the group has done nothing.
Your way of thinking, as with BSL law makers is, let’s punish the entire segment of the population because a handful of idiots can’t properly raise and care for their dogs.
The fact remains, BSL is ineffective, doesn’t work, and is the lazy way of solving a problem. Instead of putting some thought into a real universial dog law that holds owners accountable for their actions and their dogs actions under their care.
When we get that, then we can rest, and the stupidity will finally stop.
In closing, your comment about switching breeds or moving. Why should I (or anyone) who has NEVER done anything wrong have to give up our homes or our dogs because of a few fools? Yeah, that’s fair. That’s right. After all it’s for the sake of the public that I keep my vicious (by the governments terms) dogs locked up or move.
One word – Ridiculous.
Brian,Brian,Brian how old are you? my guess is oh say 12 or so. surly you are still in elementary school, if not oops sorry. shhhhhhhhh be seen and not heard.
it surely is a big neverending debate…..u have to think of it from both sides though….i understand the owners who love their dogs to death and never harm them or encourage them to be agressive and are not thugs or pimps or watever…lollol…but the fact is that if u were to be attacked or a loved one would be… you might change your mind on the subject….especially if it was a near death experience…or fatal for someone u love….now i dont know statistics and frankly i dont care about them….its just that u have to understand that it is easier to control and make strick laws against ownership of the dog than to control every pitbull owner out there…u are suffering for ignorent ppls mistakes out there but i dont think u can do much about it because there will always be the losers that want their pitbulls to be vicious…..it makes them feel tough….its like a status u know?….personnaly….i dont trust the dog to much but then again im afraid of dogs…lots of ppl are scared of them and dont trust them and that feeling did not come out of nowhere….there is a reason why…if im trying to prevent ppl from getting hurt or even casualties…i would pass that law too…unfortunately the decent dog owners will suffer but it would be a small price to pay as opposed to people getting hurt or dead because of ignorent owners…i would be willing to dissapoint a few people if it means saving kids lives…..that may sound stupid to you or u might feel indifferent towards that comment but like i said….if it means saving a friends …sisters…brothers…..KIDS….life….i think its worth it….then again like i said it is a neverending debate…there are far more important things the government should obviously be doin to save lives but i cant get into all that now because the subject is pit bull ownership…anyway i think if u always have ur dog on a strong leash when your in public….its fine with me….and watever happens in the privacy of your own home is the owners problem….peace
How do we know which one is agressive? Do we wait till it attacks before we determine that. By then it is too late. I am terrified of agressive big dogs. As soon as I see a pit bull, rotweiller, doberman, etc I am scared(beyond scared). Especially the pit bull because if you happen to come across one that is mean the damage could cost you your life or that of your child. I went to the grocery store tonight and there was a pit bull in the back of a truck. It wasn’t tied or anything. It didn’t appear to be agressive but there was no way I was getting out of my vehicle. Next thing I know I heard this barking and snarling and I turned. At the entrance of the grocery store was another one. It was tied but the agression and snarling caused many faces to pale. Then what appeared to be the owner came out and was trying to calm it well she got bit. The male owner(probably the true owner) came out. Even with this dog on a leash these people were not in control of it. It was huge and strong. A deadly weapon as far as I’m concerned. The number of these dogs and the types of people who usually get them are very alarming to me. What about my right and that of my family to go to the store, for a walk, or to the park? Do the rights of dogs come before people? I agree though that it shouldn’t be just the pit bulls that are addressed. They are dangerous and I believe that they are not a breed to be trusted ever. A girl was playing catch with one in a park she sat down and the dog completely unprovoked attacked her and ripped half of her scalp off. No warning, no show of agression until she sat down. I am sorry to those of you who love them but they have caused me such terror even the loss of a job, that I would be very happy if they were gone. I’m tired of people not caring about other people and putting their own ideas and beliefs about these animals ahead ofhuman beings. All dogs have the potential to attack but please don’t tell me that I’m misinformed about this dog. I have seen it first hand more than once. It is dangerous, unpredictable and attracts owners(not all……but many)who are themselves dangerous or want to appear that way. I support the ban on pit bulls.
Hey Deb, did you know that in most places it’s illegal to let dog ride in the back of a truck? Why don’t you report such things? Did you know it is YOUR right to report an aggressive dog in a public place? Why don’t YOU report such things? Point fingers, support bans, stay scared, but until YOU help enforce CURRENT LAWS nothing will change. That has always been my point. Every single owner in our country has laws to obey. Those who don’t are not punished and therefore they create new ones so they people who are supposed to enforce the old ones can still not do anything and just be lazy. If you ban Pit Bulls, they will turn to other breeds. You going to ban them too?
Just got on your site Jason. All I can tell you is that there is no point replying to these Uneducated (pit bull) haters. These are the type of people that have to learn the hard way. What comes around goes around. I suppose all black people are bad too, and all Germans, and all women are stupid. Dangerous people. What a waste of flesh. Ban stupid people.
Linda
Linda, why not reply? If you repell them and act as if they are stupid you are doing nothing but hiding from the problem. My job, no my mission is to change minds. How do you change minds when you don’t respond to the very people who challenge you. I have changed hundreds of “haters” minds and even made some allies and friends along the way. — Jason Mann
