Pit Bull Attacks, Enough Already!

May 30th, 2006

Are you as sick of hearing about Pit Bull attacks as I am?

Are you just as sick of hearing about the ways the attacks
should be stopped?

Muzzles, 3 foot leashes, cages and kennels, and other completely ineffective methods are tossed up like salad at a Sunday brunch when one of the 7-8-9-10 breeds that are labeled, “Pit Bulls” bites someone or someone’s dog.

What will it take for people to understand that these dogs owners are responsible? An act of God?

I am sorry if this seems so sarcastic but enough is enough.

Pit Bull = American Pit Bull Terrier.

I find it amazing that people don’t use this blanket kind of statement with other breeds.

Boxers = Let’s call them Pit Bulls. I mean, after all they look like them (not even close).

200 Lbs BullMastiff = Yup. It’s a Pit Bull.

That would be like calling every Retriever (Golden, Chesapeke Bay, Labrador) a Retriever and any dog that looks like them a Retriever too.

So here we sit, 8-9-10 breeds are referred to as “Pit Bulls” but they are not. They are different breeds altogether and this makes the attack issue even worse. Not to mention the stuck up AKC says “Pit bulls are not purebred dogs” because they don’t register them. Hello! You register their close cousin the American Staffordshire Terrier. I won’t debate whether or not they are the same breed as the American Pit Bull Terrier. Some think they are. Me, I honestly don’t care. They are close enough.

For those who are not owners of the American Pit Bull Terrier, stop calling your dog a Pit Bull. Seriously. They are not Pit Bulls. They are whatever breeds they are and if they are a mixed breed dog, they are a mixed breed dog aka, a Mutt.

Wanna know what will stop the amount of attacks? Holding PEOPLE responsible for their actions. That’s a start.

Stopping BSL. Breed Specific Legislation causes owners to flood into surrounding communities. More dogs, more people, some irresponsible, more bites for that area. Common sense.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is not for everyone and for those who sugar coat the breed and make them out to be the ideal dog for everyone, please stop. They are great dogs. Obviously I am biased but I am also realistic.

Muzzles will not solve the problem. Breeders who screen their buyers and require a strict set of criteria before selling the puppy would help. People who have them being required to take them to obedience classes and have them trained would also help.

Shelters and rescues not being allowed to adopt out dogs with serious temperament issues like aggression, extreme fear, and health problems would also go a long way to stopping the bites from happening.

Honestly, these things should be done for every breed of dog out there. More little dogs have tried to take my hands and feet off than big dogs. The big dogs that have tried to bite me have not been Pit Bull Terriers, but German shepherds, Rottweilers, and mixed breed dogs with serious issues.

All of them had issues. Fear, dominance, you name it, they had it.

Dogs that are unsound (incorrect temperaments) should be put to sleep and make room for the dogs with correct temperaments (sound). Again, this would go a long way to stopping the problem.

In conclusion, the entire problem is complex and a breed ban or restriction simply doesn’t address the problem entirely. Thus, it’s completely ineffective and criminal.

With the increase in human population, crammed together in neighborhoods where the houses are so close you can read your neighbors morning paper without getting out of your chair, and the increase in irresponsible people (no one is held accountable these days for anything), is it any wonder we have an increase in dog bites?

When you think about it. It’s an epidemic and I’m not talking about Pit Bulls here. I’m talking about dog bites. Every breed, every size, and every bite that happens is a direct result of people not being responsible. Starting with the breeders or people who “have one litter” to show the “miracle of birth” to their Playstation engorged brats and ending with the owners who are either naive about the problem (we love him sooo much), simply don’t care (why should I?), and the people who make it their goal in life to make new laws that don’t work because they are lazy and can’t think of a better way to deal with a problem.

And for all the whiners out there that say, “But, but, but, but, the breed is so danerous….” All dogs bite. People let them. Until we make it so people have to take responsibility for the dogs actions, the bites will continue.

Dangerous Pit Bulls – Why do they exist?

May 15th, 2006

I have not wrote about this topic for a long time. One reason is because frankly I’m sick of hearing about how Pit Bulls are dangerous.

On that note, dangerous Pit Bulls do exist.

Despite what fanciers would have you believe all Pit Bulls are not loving Angels that would rather lick you than bite you. Some will bite you, some will hurt you, and some are extremely dangerous.

To turn your back to the problem and act as if the world is out to get the breed is being naive and unrealistic.

Irresponsibly bred, irresponsibly raised, and irresponsible owners are the direct cause of serious dog bites in our country. Some people say it’s not a Pit Bull problem, it’s a people problem.

I say it’s not a Pit Bull problem, it’s a stupid people problem.

As a breed they have been exploited for over a decade. People breed whatever they can find and they sell them for $300-$5,000 per puppy. This creates unstable, unsound, dangerous dogs because they are bred for color, size, width of head, and not a single thought is given to the temperament of the dog.

These dogs are taking over the population in my opinion. Because they are easily purchased by anyone. Those customers go on to breed their newly aquired dog to another “good looking dog” and the cycle repeats.

Responsible, reputable breeders don’t breed enough to fill the demand. They have waiting lists that require people to wait for years in some cases.

Dangerous Pit Bulls exist because people give money to breeders who are not breeders but profiter’s trying to make money off their rare silver pups or their big giant headed freaks
and people continue to buy them. Only to end up with a dog that has issues, develops problems then people avoid the problems, make excuses and create a dangerous dog.

If people would stop, think, and research before they went out and got some crap dog, we would have less dog bites.

Jason, You Don’t Know anything about Pit Bulls

May 1st, 2006

A blog comment by Andy reads:

“I think you are a very one sided ignorant person. You are as bad as the people who are exploiting pit bulls for fighting. You are just on the other side of the straw saying Pit Bulls are just good family pets and strong working dogs. BLAHH!!”

You can read the post that Andy commented by clicking here.

Why did I take the time to devote a post to respond to this comment?

Simple. When anyone says I am exploiting the breed or am as bad as people who do so, well, I take offense to that.

I don’t get offended often because you have to have a thick skin to be in the position I’m in. I take a very public stance against people who would use the American Pit Bull Terrier as a four legged weapon. Either in a pit fight or a home protection tool.

The American Pit Bull Terrier was not, is not, and should not be bred for or trained for real life home protection. Protection SPORTS are just that, a sport your dog learns is a game.

Anyone who works with real life protection training will tell you two things about the APBT and real life protection.

1. You have to work extremely hard to go against good breeding and get an APBT to bite a person for real.

2. They are not ideal for the job especially considering the abundance of breeds that take to it easily and are highly profiecent at it. Dobermans and Belgian Malinois come to mind right off the bat as two excellent canidates for real world protection.

You are one of those people who, like a dog fighter, use a breed of dog to fill a gap in your own personality. I could live fine without my dogs. I could protect my home and family without a dog to help.

Only in rare occassions would I suggest any dog be used for home protection or real world protection and then you should choose the right breed for the job.

I’ve said it a hundred times and I’m going to repeat it here again, The American Pit Bull Terrier is a crappy guard dog. There are some examples of the breed that do work as guard dogs and do a great job at it. However, as a breed of dog, their very instincts tell them not to be people aggressive in any situation.

Ever wonder why so many APBT’s are abused but yet are great with people? Even after being severly abused they retain their people loving nature.

Hmmm, sure sounds like a great dog for a real world home protector to me. How about you?

To those who are reading this, I am not bashing anyone here. I am responding to an offensive remark made by a guy who is a shining example of someone that doesn’t deserve to share space with the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Tell us Andy, did you train your dog to be a real world protector? Or do you “count on” your dog’s ability to attack people who get on your property? Seriously, I would interested in hearing why you want to use the breed as a guard dog.
