Your Pit Bull is Dangerous and Other Comments that Boil my Blood

June 19th, 2006

As an author, advocate, dog trainer, and Pit Bull fancier I get mountains of email concerning the breed. From how to start a dog on a good diet, to how to train a 6 month old puppy to sit and everything in between.

I also receive comments about the breed and my stance about breed bans. A lot of them.

It’s not unusual for me to receive 5 or 10 emails telling me I’m a nut case or my dogs are dangerous and I’m too stupid to realize it and that when they kill someone I’ll suddenly realize how dangerous my dogs are.

Normally I shuck these emails to the trash bin and go on about my day but from time to time I do send a reply to the sender. Once again, they come back telling me how stupid I am and my dogs are born killers and will without a doubt hurt someone.

I also receive emails from people around the world who share their lives with Pit Bulls that receive similar emails or meet people while out in public that have similar comments.

To every single person who has emailed me such a comment, you might do well if you look in the mirror and try to understand that (A) you have no expertise in the area and (B) you are making comments based on absolutely nothing.

When people say I’m stupid because they know my dogs will attack the first thing that crosses my mind is, “yes, and you know me and my dogs so well. Of course you are in a position to tell me what my dogs will do.”

How ridiculous is that? Hey, your Cocker Spaniel will bite someone, I know it, they are a Cocker Spaniel and I heard from my friend’s friend, who has an aunt that they bite more than any other dog in the world!

Pit Bull attacks make the news because they are sensational. For me? They are tired and old and there are bigger things to worry about than some idiot who let their dog hurt someone.

Yes, I love the Pit Bull and I love the American Pit Bull Terrier breed. Yes I am biased to an extent. But I never use facts that I can not back up 110% that have been proven to be true by an unbiased source.

I want to make it clear, right here, right now that there is only one dog in the world that is a Pit Bull. That dog is the only dog in the world with the words, Pit Bull in it’s registered name and that dog is the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Every other dog on earth that is referred to as a “Pit Bull” is, in fact, not a Pit Bull but a Pit bull type dog and to define them as a Pit Bull is making the issue even more confusing.

Breeds that are called Pit Bulls that are different breeds altogether…

American Bulldogs, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, Boxers, Dogo Argentino, Dogue De Bordeaux’s, Cane Corso, Dogo Canario, Presa Canario, and mixes of any of these dogs.

Think about that for a second…

Do you even know what a Pit Bull is? Have you ever seen a purebred Pit Bull? Odds are the majority of the general public has never seen a real American Pit Bull Terrier.

Yet, they claim my dogs are dangerous and will kill the first person they come into contact with or they will “Snap” one day and kill every one in their sleep.

Get Real!

If you are for breed bans, let’s look at it from a different point of view. Once you allow the government to start making wide bans on the breeds of dogs a person is allowed to own what do you think will happen next? Oh yes, the animal rights groups will move to have more breeds banned, then more, then the cat’s will start to get banned, then companion animals altogether will be banned. Think I’m crazy? Support the bans and you’ll see this come true.

Let’s look at it from yet another aspect.

Did you know that in Denver and other places were complete bans are enforced that people who use the breed as a service dog have their dogs taken?

That means the blind man who has relied on his companion for years to assist him in living his life gets his dog snatched.

The deaf 10 year old with the service dog that happens to be a Pit Bull gets her dog taken too.

Think I’m crazy? How about Taco, the dog that helps a lady in Canada who lost her leg, she is still fighting to keep him!

How many people’s lives have to be ruined before the madness stops? How many families have to lose their companions based on nothing else other than breed or looking like a certain breed before the rest of the dog owners in our society wake up and stop pointing fingers at the dogs?

I have said it dozens of times. People are the problem. We do not need new laws. We have hundreds of laws that deal with these issues already established. However, they are not enforced and they are not taken seriously. Why is it that you can see 10 people walking their dogs in the park off-leash when nearly every city in America has a leash law?

Why is it that you can see people driving down the road with a dog hanging out the drivers side window and the Police pass them without giving them a ticket?

Why are the current laws not enforced when violations happen right in front people that should be enforcing them?

Oh, wait, it’s not important that the little foo-foo dog is hanging out the drivers side window obstructing the old 90 year old ladies view.

It’s not important that the 15 small dogs running around the park nipping all the kids are out there because I mean, how much damage could they do?

It’s not important when you see people breaking these laws because you know, they have better things to do like real Police work.

Why do the people who whine and moan and complain about how dangerous Pit Bulls are do nothing when they see someone breaking these laws with another breed of dog?

It’s not about making new laws to fix the problem. It’s about enforcing those laws on the books to the letter and actually asking dog owners to be responsible for everything their dogs do.

Wouldn’t that be interesting if that happened?

Case by case basis. Stop the stupidity and stop breed bans.

I want to end with a comment that boils my blood to know end.

You are full of crap, these dogs are vicious. You know it and I know it, why don’t you just come clean and tell the truth.

This comment is basically saying, “I don’t like the way you see things, come to see things my way or you are lying.”

I wouldn’t lie. For one reason, what would I gain? Nothing.

Secondly, I would never dishonor myself or American Pit Bull Terrier by lying about anything.

I have come clean and I have stood up to idiots and that makes people made because they know I am telling them the truth and the facts speak for themselves.

For the Pit Bull owners reading this. Thank you for being responsible and thank you for putting up with the rest of the worlds bull crap.

The Pit Bull Problem – Let’s Peel this Onion

June 12th, 2006

I’m not going to start out with a cute little analogy or anything like that. Today, it’s right to the point because frankly it’s high time for some straight shooting.

The Pit Bull problem. Honestly is there a problem? In my opinion I say no. I say we have a stupid people problem and the direct blame is our society and the fact Americans have lost touch with reality.

We want every thing done for us. We want Ronald Mcdonald lifestyles. Wake up, order and get what you want because it’s your right.

No, it’s not your right. You have to earn it!

Lazy people, stupid parents, and a government who puts band-aids on issues to solve them are the problem.

Whatever happened to responsiblity? Now you can kill someone and become famous or write a book and make millions.

You can’t even spank your child without the fear of being jailed for abuse! Hello! The little brat needed it!

America is not a place of free living without responsibility for your actions. America is a place were we are given the right to PURSUE happiness not the right to be happy 24/7 every single day of the week.

For those supporting breed bans and who are scared, stop profiling people and dogs.

It’s pathetic.

FEAR of everything is the new American Dream. If you are not whining and complaining and scared for your life, you are not living the new American Dream.

If you are not complaining that the music in the car next to you at the red light is too loud you are not living the American Dream.

If you are not so wrapped up in your own little bubble of a world that you feel like it’s not your place to help someone in need, you are not leaving the new American Dream.

If you are not stuffing your face and expecting everything to be handed down to you by a government that is about as intelligent as an ink spot, you are not living the new American Dream.

Pit Bull Problem? We don’t have a Pit Bull problem. We have a lazy, stupid, completely self-absorbed, whining little baby of a person problem.

I’m not talking about the criminals, the abusive owner, the people who live in the bad parts of town or the gangsters either. I’m talking about middle America. I’m talking about the rich, the middle class and those in between the cracks.

I’m talking about people.

Every day our society becomes more eroded. We hold up stupid skinny blondes with foo-foo dogs as our childrens role models instead of holding up the abused mother of 2 who became the CEO of her own company and helps other abused women over come their situations.

We hold up movie stars that believe they can drink, whore, fight, and break the laws because they are Oscar winners instead of holding up the young man who is a father to his kids and doesn’t think the world is all about the dollar and how many hummers he can buy in a year.

The problem stares you in the face every time you walk outside. Every time you go to the store or go to the mall. Every time you flip on the TV. The problem is right there in the mirror every
time you brush your teeth.

It starts with you and ends with you.

Our image is not what defines us but it is our actions that dictate who we are.

In conclusion, we don’t have a Pit Bull problem. We have a lack of common sense, irresponsible, I deserve every thing because I was born, people problem.

Until we address the root of the problem you will continue to live in fear of persecution because you happen to share your life with a specific breed of dog that is labeled a “Pit Bull.”

Wake up, take action, and stand up for our rights. Our right to PURSUE happiness that was given to all of us by our forefathers. If I choose to pursue happiness with a Pit Bull by my side and I’m responsible then you have no place to take that right from me because of something someone else with the breed did.

With the rare exception of medical issues, every single Pit Bull attack out there was caused by a person. Why are they not held responsible? That is the question supporters of bans and unfair
laws should be asking.
