The Pit Bull Problem – Let’s Peel this Onion

June 12th, 2006

I’m not going to start out with a cute little analogy or anything like that. Today, it’s right to the point because frankly it’s high time for some straight shooting.

The Pit Bull problem. Honestly is there a problem? In my opinion I say no. I say we have a stupid people problem and the direct blame is our society and the fact Americans have lost touch with reality.

We want every thing done for us. We want Ronald Mcdonald lifestyles. Wake up, order and get what you want because it’s your right.

No, it’s not your right. You have to earn it!

Lazy people, stupid parents, and a government who puts band-aids on issues to solve them are the problem.

Whatever happened to responsiblity? Now you can kill someone and become famous or write a book and make millions.

You can’t even spank your child without the fear of being jailed for abuse! Hello! The little brat needed it!

America is not a place of free living without responsibility for your actions. America is a place were we are given the right to PURSUE happiness not the right to be happy 24/7 every single day of the week.

For those supporting breed bans and who are scared, stop profiling people and dogs.

It’s pathetic.

FEAR of everything is the new American Dream. If you are not whining and complaining and scared for your life, you are not living the new American Dream.

If you are not complaining that the music in the car next to you at the red light is too loud you are not living the American Dream.

If you are not so wrapped up in your own little bubble of a world that you feel like it’s not your place to help someone in need, you are not leaving the new American Dream.

If you are not stuffing your face and expecting everything to be handed down to you by a government that is about as intelligent as an ink spot, you are not living the new American Dream.

Pit Bull Problem? We don’t have a Pit Bull problem. We have a lazy, stupid, completely self-absorbed, whining little baby of a person problem.

I’m not talking about the criminals, the abusive owner, the people who live in the bad parts of town or the gangsters either. I’m talking about middle America. I’m talking about the rich, the middle class and those in between the cracks.

I’m talking about people.

Every day our society becomes more eroded. We hold up stupid skinny blondes with foo-foo dogs as our childrens role models instead of holding up the abused mother of 2 who became the CEO of her own company and helps other abused women over come their situations.

We hold up movie stars that believe they can drink, whore, fight, and break the laws because they are Oscar winners instead of holding up the young man who is a father to his kids and doesn’t think the world is all about the dollar and how many hummers he can buy in a year.

The problem stares you in the face every time you walk outside. Every time you go to the store or go to the mall. Every time you flip on the TV. The problem is right there in the mirror every
time you brush your teeth.

It starts with you and ends with you.

Our image is not what defines us but it is our actions that dictate who we are.

In conclusion, we don’t have a Pit Bull problem. We have a lack of common sense, irresponsible, I deserve every thing because I was born, people problem.

Until we address the root of the problem you will continue to live in fear of persecution because you happen to share your life with a specific breed of dog that is labeled a “Pit Bull.”

Wake up, take action, and stand up for our rights. Our right to PURSUE happiness that was given to all of us by our forefathers. If I choose to pursue happiness with a Pit Bull by my side and I’m responsible then you have no place to take that right from me because of something someone else with the breed did.

With the rare exception of medical issues, every single Pit Bull attack out there was caused by a person. Why are they not held responsible? That is the question supporters of bans and unfair
laws should be asking.

    What a load of crap.

How many other breeds of dogs do you read about being shot by law enforcement on a weekly basis?

Pit bulls were bred for fighting other dogs. Hence the name pit bull. Pit for fighting.

Yes owners are the primary problem but it does not end there. I go to a dog park where my dog has been attacked twice by these dogs. Last week a dog was killed by two pit bulls. This same week one bit a cop and was shot. 2 days earlier a pit attacked a mother and her child and was killed by law enforcement.

What the hell are you thinking that they should not be a banned/restricted breed. They are akin to a hand gun and should be treated accordingly.

Pit bull owners can spout all the crap they want to say about “not inherently aggressive” and an “owner problem” but the fact remains they are one of the few breeds that can kill a grown man.

If ALL dog owners were responsible adults there would be no problem but that is not the case. And when you own a potentially lethal dog there should be strict oversight. You can use your patriotic and ill advised rant about “pursuit of happiness” but that also applies to the rest of the normal public who view these animals as a menace and a threat to our “life and liberty,..”

Victor, first dog parks are havens for irresponsible dog owners. The idea is flawed from the beginning. Second, it’s called popularity. If this were the 1980′s you would be writing that about German Shepherds. If it were the 1970′s you would be writing that about the Dobermen. If this were the early 1990′s you would be writing that about Rottweilers. The fact is, “Pit bulls” as defined by the general public are not a specific breed but over a dozen “look a likes” as well. A dog that is dog aggressive is NOT human aggressive. Two different types of aggression that are not related in any form or fashion. What do you think these people who have these ill mannered dogs would do if they were told to give them up? Go out and get another powerful breed and then you would be writing to that breeds advocates about the banning. Your dog WILL get banned if banning is allowed to continue. PETA and the HSUS will see to that.

While I agree with some of your points there is still the fact that over the past 28 years the majority of dog related fatal attacks involve pit bulls. Yes rottweilers were up there for a while due to popularity and the same goes for dobermans. But since 1979 pit bulls have been responsible for over 150 deaths. Rottweilers half that much.

Maybe the responsible pit bull owners should themselves lobby for strict oversight of whom gets to own a pit bull.

“What the hell are you thinking that they should not be a banned/restricted breed. They are akin to a hand gun and should be treated accordingly.”

Hmm. Felons aren’t allowed to own fire arms…I am a felon…damn, if the government listened to you, I’d have my dog taken to!

Way to go there, oh patriotic one.

  6. Jason Mann

Where did you get the 150 death data? The CDC statistics are being taken out of context and will be publishing a report in the American Veterinary Medical Association Journal that breed specific legislation does not work. This coming from the organization that maintains the fatal dog bite information in our country. It doesn’t work. Should there be strict laws? No. We have laws on the books right now that would stop most if not all of the problems if they were enforced. The problem is, they are not enforced.

  7. Amber

Yes! I agree. If the laws were inforced, there would be no problem. Having been throug these several some-odd “attacks” in the last month in Indianapolis, I’ve gotten lots of comments on my dog. They think that she is going to kill someone if I keep taking her outside. Now, that’s your load of crap.
Me and Emily, standing there, with my other Collie/Malamute mix, having a conversation about my dog killing someone. All the while, Emily and DJ are standing perfectly waiting for their next commmand.

Dogs are not people. For centuries dogs have been bred for certain chracteristics and traits that the breeders needed or wanted. Like I said before dogs are not people they are animals prone to instinct. ANY breed has the potential to be dangerous. To single any breed out is ignorant. Try to step outside of your box and do some research untainted by bias and see what you find. It won’t hurt and you might be suprised at what you find. I have been bit twice and neither dog was the infamous “pit bull”. In addition, each incident happened in seperate countries. Could be a fluke though :).

Victor, You say they are akin to a handgun and should be treated accordingly.
Guns don’t kill people. PEOPLE kill PEOPLE. Seriously though, you need to get out
    more.

  10. Kyle

Amber, I also live in Indianapolis and have to deal with all of the crap about these pit bull attacks. Have you seen the people who are supposedly “responsible” for these dogs? Complete jokers! They are trying really hard now to pass some BSL in Indy. Now I am dealing with my brother in law telling me that if I get a pit bull that he will not let his children come to my house. I told him that was too bad that he wouldn’t be coming over any more!

  11. Ally

You people who say “BAN PITS” can kiss my ass!!! They are good dogs. It all depends on how the owner raises the dog!! I got bit by a Rot when I was a little girl, it got put to sleep, do you think that made me feel better? NO! Any dog can be agressive, and dangerous. I watched a Rot about 4 years ago take down a damn Deer!! 3 feet away from me. Was it easy to get it off the deer, no. They taste blood and from then on out, its hell. There again, basic animal instincts. You people act like pits are the only animal with them?!I totally agree with the whole dog park thing. They are asking for trouble. Just like any other animal, dogs astablish dominance!! When you put a bunch together, your askin for it!!
