Pit Bulls – Family Torn Apart

November 16th, 2006

I thought quite a bit about the title before I decided to publish it. Some would say it sounds gruesome and terrible or one might think I’m suggesting Pit bulls tore a family apart.

No, quite the opposite. This post shares a link to a story where one women’s dogs got out, bit another dog on the ear, and her son was taken away only to be put into foster care by the State of Califorina.

So next time you think to yourself BSL or breed profiling won’t happen to you I would like you to remember this story.

I just love your site, and I am the proud new owner of a brindle pittie pup named Duke. The breed-specific legislation absolutely sickens me. Especially because pitties are wrongfully blamed for some of the dog attacks. I just wanted to share this site with you…it shows just how difficult it is to actually identify a pittie, let alone identify one in the frenzy of an attack.

    Wow,

What does the dog biting another dog on the ear have to
    do with the childs safety?
Maybe the other dog growled at the one that got out, so it
automaticlly thought it had to defend itself?
I could understand if maybe the dog got out and chased people and
THEN got a hold of that other dog.

This is the letter I sent to the Miami- Dade Mayor.
    Please, pass it along…
    —————————————-

    Mr. Mayor:

Why such a retrograde law, such as the Pit Bull Law is still enforced in a progresist county like Dade, a melting pot of so many rich cultures?

A dog (canis familiaris) is just a dog. The breed is the “clothing” they wear. Are we so ignorant that we still believe that the color or appearance of something is reason enough to judge and sentence?
Do we have to punish responsible owners, who train their dogs to be loving towards other human beings, because some irresponsible owner did not know how to handle a dog?
Pit Bulls are naturally kind dogs. It is abnormal and abusive training that creates aggressive dogs. And as a reminder, there are other dogs that are aggressive and they are not necessarily Pit Bulls.

Instead of forbidding a breed (forbidding, not consistent with “The Land of the Free)… could the owners of Pit Bulls have the opportunity to show to a Pit Bull specialist (as it is mentioned in the Miami- Dade Animal Service Website) that such dog is suitable to roam the streets on a leash?

I own a kind and beautiful Pit Bull which has never attacked anyone. I cannot imagine my dog attacking anyone. I cannot even imagine my dog growling!
I am also a real estate investor and artist. I want to make my residence in South Beach, and I just cannot consider the fact of parting with my kind friend.

Please, Mr. Mayor. Speak with dog specialists, biologist, even Pit Bull owners. They will all agree. Pit Bulls, besides being an American born breed, they are also the kindest dogs when they are trained normally.
    Remove such retrograde law.

    Thank you for your time

Thank you for having this blog. Pitbulls are so misunderstood. They have endured so much pain and suffering I think more than any other breed because of ignorance.
This is no different than banning a human from somewhere because of their color or race.

i have one thing to say. this is rediculous. i am only a junior in high school but i have already decided to write my english paper and do my english project on the prejedice against these beautiful dogs. i have 3 dogs that me and my family saved from a couplde who left 2 of them and then one who we saved out of a van from a guy my dad knew, the dog was going to be put down because she was “viscious” because she barked at people when they walked by the van. she was raised in a horrible home, whil being hit by 2*4′s. she would come off mean to some people, but when we first met her, she was a doll, and we fell in love with her, now i have 11 dogs all pit bulls. my female just had puppies. and i feel i am doing something great by giving them a place to live where they can be safe. yes a pit bull can be mean but everydog can no matter what they are. my dog once saved my 7 year old cousin from a guy who was trying to kidnap him. that is what pit bulls are like. not mean. they are loving family dogs and when things like this story happens just upsets me.its unjustice. and thank you for sharing your story because it has helped me even more with the passion i need to write my paper. thank you. and i will do what i can to change this prejedice stuff.

I’m just here to vent and to grieve over the events that shall come to me in the next two days.

I was rudley awaken by the Miami Dade Animal Services this morning. My herat was torn to pieces when I was told that I have 48 hours to remove my baby from this house and county or face euithinazation. The officer asked to see my sweetheart and I complied. As soon as Onyx came out He jumped on the guy and satrted licking him to pieces. How can someone be so cruel and heartless to take that away from a family. It’s hard losing a pet due to death, But I feel that it’s harder making a pet go live somewhere else because I know that everyday he will be giving his love to another family. Yes he will be happy but I won’t be.

I don’t understand why this silly law was passed. I’m no idiot and my baby is no killer. I honestly didn’t know that he was prohibited here. I just moved here less than a month ago. If I had known I would have tried everything in my power to hide him. And now just because some nosy neighbor wanated to get his rocks off by causing pain to me I have to lose my greatest joy in this world.

So to all the other families that have there beloveds torn from them, I am with you.
Thanks for letting me vent. Onyx I love you always.

If I had a nickel for every news story about a pit bull mauling that quoted the owner as saying “He never behaved like this before…” I’d be rich. These dogs are a menace and a danger to society. They are at best completely unpredictable and at worst killers. In pairs, they are flat out savages and should be avoided at all costs. Whenever I see one in Miami Dade County, I call Animal Control. (No Kara, I did not call Animal Control on you–I don’t know who you are.) I am a dog owner and a dog lover but these dogs are not fit for any owner who has children, elderly or other pets. How many more grandmas are going to have to get their faces chewed off before pit bull advocates start to face reality ???

I’m sorry folks, but there is a reason why such prejudice exists against these dogs. Yes, some are trained by their owners to be aggressive and are therefore clearly and openly dangerous. But I’ve seen way too many that were raised in a loving and caring environment who attack children provoked or unprovoked. It’s like having a loaded weapon in your house–you never know when it will go off and when it does, it can cause severe damage and sometimes death.

  9. Jason Mann

Flat out savages? You’ve SEEN way too many attack children provoked or unprovoked. Really? How many, who was attacked, were the attacks reported? And you show BSL doesn’t work since Miami Dade County has a complete ban on Pit Bulls and Pit Bull type dogs since the early 1980′s. If those laws worked, why are their Pit Bulls there? Hmmm…. Loaded gun? Silly. The dog is only as dangerous as a PERSON ALLOWS them to be. No doctor, vet, or scientist on planet earth has proven these dogs are inherently more dangerous than any other dog. Fact is, they have proved just the opposite. You must know a ton of Pit Bull owners to be able to witness so many unprovoked and provoked attacks on kids. And those provoked attacks? That’s the parents fault for letting the kid get near the dog and act foolish. Kids and dogs should learn to behave together and that doesn’t mean leaving little Sally alone with the dog. People are the problem. Easy. Simple. TRUE.

  10. Amber Holmes

People are the problem! I cannot believe what I am reading. Your a dog lover? Isnt a pit bull a dog? I have a son, other kinds of pets and four bullies. I have never worried about the safety of my son or other pets. You call animal control for what? Did those dogs do something to you? Really, before you start flapping your ignorant and prejudice lips, lets see all the reports, I rarely hear of attacks, ANYWHERE. Do some research pal.
