New Pit Bull attacks are prompting the Reading City Council to think about dangerous dog ordinances. Their law would require Pit Bulls to wear a muzzle and be walked on a chain-leashes while outside. Is it me or do these laws want to make the dogs look more vicious than they really are? I don’t know if that holds any truth to it but most people see a muzzled dog on a chain-leash they will instantly think, that dog must be dangerous! I could be wrong though…

Pit Bulls and Stupid Fools… this is a solid article if you ask me. The comments on the bottom of course have the same old “these dogs are killers and man eaters and blah blah” but there is plenty of space for your comment.

Michael Vick was finally indicted for his involvement with the dog fighting on his property. All of this press exposure has me thinking about the real problems our breed faces. Is dog fighting really the biggest threat to our breed? My answer may surprise you…
I believe it is not the biggest problem, matter of fact I find it to be a tiny problem in a sea of gigantic problems that stem from everyday owners who are not responsible, ignorant, or plain out and out stupid in regards to their dogs. I am appalled at the lack of common sense and responsibility of Pit Bull owners these days.
More to the point, I am ashamed to be associated with some of these people because of their stupidity and ignorance. I receive well over 100 emails per week with questions like, “My dogs are pretty, I breaded them and they have 12 puppies, how do I care for them?”
Another recent question, “My female is aggressive towards dogs, I can’t tolerate this, how do I stop it?”
I could go on and on and on and on with examples of emails I receive. Some of them are so out there that I am literally shocked. It takes a lot to shock me these days in regards to Pit Bulls and their plight but it happens.
Dog fighting is a problem. However, it’s these average everyday otherwise intelligent dog owners that cause the bans, the problems, and the attacks. It’s these breed for size and color pet dog breeders that are putting substandard damaged animals in the hands of these owners.
So what’s that answer? Bans? Restrictions? Regulation of breeding? I do not think any of these things will help. The only thing I can think of that will help is you. The Pit Bull owner. Every time you go outside with your dog it is your responsibility to use common sense, control your dog, and educate the uneducated.
If you feel that is not your job then you are naive. If you believe you can’t help by showing people your dog is well mannered, trained, and is social then you are again naive.
Do not think for a second that you are not responsible for the breed or what happens. Because it works the same way as irresponsible owners cause breed bans.
One irresponsible owner allows their dog to harm someone the hammer falls on the entire breed. Think about that for a second…
No seriously, think on that…
A single person’s irresponsibility causes you and every other Pit Bull owner in the country serious problems. What if you and I were to step up and show the world our dogs were well mannered and well behaved? What if BSL finds it’s way to your town? Wouldn’t you think those people you have made an impression on would think, “you know, I have met a Pit Bull and honestly, I think it’s the owners not the dogs that are the problem.” Do you think that would help our cause?
I do. I think it would help tremendously. It would sway one more person to our cause and help fight irresponsible owners that cause the problems rather than causing a state wide focus on a particular breed of dog that is as innocent as a newborn baby.
I am amazed how human logic works sometimes. Saying a Pit Bull (or any dog for that matter) is responsible for their actions is like saying a truck that is driven down the street into a house is responsible for the damage.
People are in control of the dogs and the truck. People are in control of their actions. If people fail to take responsibility then you have a problem. For the life of me I don’t see how educated people don’t see that. They are so quick to blame the dogs they seem to suddenly be brain dead or so dense they simply won’t open their eyes to the real issues.
I don’t know about you but I am a tax paying, local business owner, who helps my local government and economy and I for one am sick and tired of being labeled a “thug,” “tough guy wanna be,” or “criminal” for the actions of some retard 23 states away who was irresponsible and allowed their dog to hurt someone or another dog.
Right now it’s time for you, yes you, to take a real good look in the mirror and ask yourself. Are you part of the solution or are you part of the problem?
