Dog Fighting – Pit Bulls as Canine Warriors

September 11th, 2007

All the recent hub-bub about Michael Vick and dog fighting brought up a lot of questions about dog fighting and the validity of having Pit Bulls in our society. My emotions are worn on my sleeve and my rage, yes that is rage is something that I have a hard time dealing with. I sit here thinking about video’s I saw on Real Sports with Bryant Gumble aired on HBO recently and my temper flares to a degree that people don’t want to be in the same room with me. They literally see the anger in my eyes and from my body language.

These emotions are what keeps me doing what I am doing, advocating responsible Pit Bull ownership and trying to find a way to make dog fighting a 15-50 year prison sentence crime. Personally, Vick should rot in jail. When a dog fighter says, “We are not hurting anyone. We are just allowing the dogs to do what they love to do.” My stomach turns. They are hurting someone. They are hurting me. They are hurting the image of our dogs. They are hurting the dogs. They are hurting their children who they raise to enjoy these sick blood sports that should be gone from our society.

There is no place in our world for such canine warriors anymore. Those days are gone. While I am proud of my dogs heritage as a constant companion, loyal to the end, even under threat of death, I am not proud of the low life street punk, thug wanna be, redneck, high rolling lawyer wanting his bloody kicks that continue these sports today.

People that are involved in dog fighting are not only the retarded, moral lacking, youth of America. No, high upstanding doctors and lawyers get involved in these fights as well. Moral deprived people like Michael Vick who makes millions each year get involved. Vick, in all likelihood will not play football ever again. My thinking is, So what.

That is not enough. He obviously doesn’t care about that because he wouldn’t have been so retarded as to throw it away for a stupid ancient activity like dog fighting.

People around the nation are outraged by the allegations, but then again he has his supporters to. Many of my African American friends call it blackmail. Scapegoat, picking on a rich African American, and other excuses that are so ridiculous that I literally laugh out loud when they try to make it sound like someone is out to get Vick because he is a rich African American football star.

Please. Get a grip and come back to face the reality of the situation. Michael Vick, like all dog fighters, is a low life punk. Nothing but a PUNK.

If you feel dog fighting is okay and is not a big deal, well, I would have to say you are a punk as well. Only punks think cruelity is okay.

Dog fighting must be stopped and the only way to do that is to gather up together and in one voice say we’ve had enough. It’s time to punish the guilty and make them pay for their crimes.

Jason Mann

I HAVE TO SAY THANK YOU! FOR WHAT YOU HAVE SAID IN THIS BLOG RIGHT DOWN TO EACH PUNK! I LOVED IT. I HAVE 2 PIT BULLS THAT I LOVE VERY MUCH, WITH 2 CHILDREN, AND A SMALL DOG. SCARLET AND JAGER ARE VERY DIFFERENT SHE IS LAID BACK, QUIET, AND SOMEWHAT SHY. WHILE JAGER IS ANXIOS TO PLAY, CURIOS, AND FULL OF ENERGY TO DRIVE YOU CRAZY. THEY ARE BOTH LOYAL AND LOVE TO CUDDLE. I CAN’T IMAGINE EVER HAVING ANOTHER BREED OF DOG. THANK YOU AGAIN.

I completely agree with everything you said about the dogfighting!! I have a pittbull mix who is 9 months old and he is the most adorable and loving dog i have ever owned ( i have had labs and lab mixes previously). I made the mistake of watching the Bryant Gumble HBO report on Micheal Vick too and I cried through the whole thing!! I grabbed Nate and just held him when they showed pictures of dogs that looked like him…. I cannot imagine the kind of person you must be to enjoy watching dogs kill eachother, and killing them in horrible ways if they dont fight hard enough. Nate is like my kid, he is my constant companion and loves nothing more than to play and run or just cuddle. He has never shown even the tinniest bit of aggression toward adults, children, or other dogs. One of his favorite thingks is to meet new doggie friends!! I know that not all dogs have personalities like his, but all the same i cannot imagine that the dogs like to be forced to fight and kill eachother.

ONE MORE THING! I have a couple friends and relatives who LOVE LABRADOR RETRIEVERS…. Great. Good for them, right? NO, BAD… MY daughter has been bitten by my brother-in-law’s Lab, and NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT,, WHY? Because I like you, believe that we as HUMANS need to learn more responsibility around animals and FOR animals. I teach my kids(as a Pit Bull/Dog Owner) that the dog’s learn from US. AND we need to be aware of our own actions for and around ANY/EVERY dog. I told my daughter that Lab was NOT to be trusted(in the way we trust our Pits)because the dog has a “flakey/bi-polar!” temperament, and I knew something like that would happen-THE LAB IS UNSTABLE/GROSSLY OVERWEIGHT/SNAPS AT EVERYONE!) Yet, if it were one of MY(pits)DOGS, you could bet your a** the whole family would be in an uproar because “they knew it!”… Yet, it was a dumb a** Lab, that hates kids, hates adults, needs to be on a SERIOUS diet, and naturally is just PISSED OFF because ITS OWNERS(my bro&sis in law? don’t take proper care of it! I’d be pissed too!!! RIGHT?

Michael Vick shouldn’t use dog fighting. He has all of this money and that’s was he uses it on!! Children look up to him and this is what he is doing!! He’s going to get children to do this when they grow older.
    That’s just being sick!

Very well said. I couldn’t agree more. I just stumbled on your blog and your PitBullLovers.com site, and just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate what pit bull advocates like yourself are doing for our wonderful breed. Pits rule!

Yes,I agree the dog fighting rings and those involved should have severe consequences..
how ever it does nut have any thing to do with race i have been asked many fight training questions by as many white americans
(mostly males ) as black americans.Truth is that all these people with these ideas and interest for that reason are bad for this breed . My story is since a little boy my dad bred rotts for thirteen years, they are good dogs but they didnt give me that this is MY dog feeling. My dog loves kids other dogs and life in general he is like an ambassedor when we go out showing those who cringe when I say hes a pitbull that yes you can pet,hug play, and most of all love these dogs.

I am just cruising through, reading up on some pit bull lit, and I agree completely. I am an owner of 4 pitties myself (owner, not a breeder), and for me to even consider putting my loving, caring, and self sacraficing pups in harms way makes me sick. I also agree with the 15-50 year sentence, because to me, people who kill other people serve anywhere from 30-life and sometimes the death penalty for killing another person. The way I view dog fighting sentences is this.. If we can sentence a person to life for killing someone else, why can’t we put dog fighters away for long periods of time? Regardless of the race, job, or any other facts of the owners. Victims’ families of people who were murdered speak out for the dead and injured.. We are the victims families, in this case, the owners of pitbulls (or any other breed) that NEED to speak out, we have all this public awareness on preventing murders, but no preventitive or very little that I personally have heard of. I think the only difference between a dogs life and a humans is that one can verbally speak out and one cannot. In essence it is still a life that is being taken, a life that is lead into being taught that harming other things is okay. Yes dogs are not humans but they still are emotional, loving, animals that deserved to be treated as does any human with emotion. That is only my point of view, and it may jump around alot, so try and make sense of it. As your mom or dad told you.. keep your hands and feet to yourself.. in this case.. keep your paws and jaws to yourself :].. Thx!

I couldn’t agree with your comments on Vick and dog-fighting more. It
has nothing to do with the color of his skin and all to do with the
cruel insensitive treatment to these animals. There is always somebody
who has to turn a situation into a racial issue. I turned away from the
tv when pictures and video footage was shown of the brutal torture and
killing of these dogs were shown on news programs. It brought tears to my eyes and made me so ANGRY along with all my dog owning friends and families.
If Peyton Manning was the person behind all this it wouldn’t change our
feelings one bit. There is no place in our soceity for crap like that!
Just because it has been done for years behind closed doors does not make
it okay. Penalties and sentences should be stiffer for starters. 15- 50yrs. sounds great. Get the meassage out there that it is not accepted @ all and if you involve yourself with dog-fighting activity you will pay a hefty price.
FYI: 22 of the dogs that were taken from Vick’s property were taken to
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. The dogs are being rehabilitated
there and some our almost ready for adoption.

Jason, I agree totally with what you say. I recently watched a documentary called off the chain and I also felt so angry that I had to turn it off. I can’t understand how a documentary maker can actually witness something so evil, apart from seeing dogs ripping into each other, a dog, that has given everything to satisfy his so called masters desire to make money or whatever motive, be wired up and eletrocuted because he didn’t win. I was deeply disturbed to see such abuse!!
