Pit Bulls and Dog Aggression

April 22nd, 2005

I would like to tell you about an email I received today.

I received an email from a person who had a fight erupt between her kids Pit Bull and one of her dogs.

Sadly, her dog died several days later from the injuries sustained in the fight.

You see, this person had 8 dogs, 9 including the Pit Bull. From what I understand it she put the Pit Bull up when her dogs were running around the house and at feeding time.

That doesn’t matter to me in this situation because:

  1. The Pit Bull should have never even been in a house with 8 other dogs.
  2. This is a recipe for disaster.

Now I’m not pointing fingers at anyone here. I’m simply making an observation and I wanted to share it here because all Pit Bull owners can learn from this.

Having more than one Pit Bull I’m speaking from experience. I have never had so much as tooth mark on either of my girls for three reasons:

  1. They are separated when I’m not around.
  2. They are never left alone with other dogs.
  3. I know that despite the fact they have NEVER shown aggression towards each other they can at any moment.

I get this all the time, “But I don’t like taking my babies and separating them. It makes me sad.”

Would you be happier if one of your “babies” was dead?

Take precautions and always expect them to fight. Even if they have lived their whole lives together without a single problem. By expecting them to fight you will take the precautions and avoid the tragedy.

A few more things about this…

  1. Pit Bulls are not people. In other words while we put human emotions and terms to their actions, they are still dogs and dogs will be dogs.
  1. Pit Bulls are DOG AGGRESSIVE. All of them. Some are extremely mild, so much so that people think they are not dog aggressive, I assure you, they are.

Some are extremely dog aggressive and it’s obvious. This isn’t a bad thing, but if you have a dog aggressive dog you know you will need to take precautions to keep your dog out of the papers.

  1. Pit Bulls do not just “snap” and attack your other dogs or people.

I asked this lady a question which I’ll ask again here.

Question: Do you think it was possible the other dog provoked the fight?

Since she did not see it start, how does she know her dog didn’t do something to the Pit Bull to cause them to react so aggressively?

She doesn’t.

It’s not impossible that the other dog started it. However, since the other dog died and was loved by this woman the Pit Bull is automatically the cause of the problem.

I am sorry for this person’s loss. I truly am sad for her and her dog.

However, I’m always sad for the Pit Bull because now, he will likely be put to sleep.

Why?

The politically correct answer would be: because he’s a Pit Bull.

My answer: The people involved did not take enough precautions, they didn’t respect the breed, and they put all the dogs involved in danger.

One ounce of research would have shown it was not a good idea to put a Pit Bull in a house hold with 8 (yes that is EIGHT) other dogs.

I will not mention the person or their dog’s names, but I will say this, she stabbed the Pit Bull over 10 times to stop the fight. Break stick? Whoops, forgot, no research.

I’m amazed he’s still alive after being stabbed so many times.

I also want to say, if you have a Pit Bull and another dog in your life, buy a break stick and learn how to use it properly.

People will read this and say, “See! I told you they are dangerous!”

To those folks I say, not at all. They are dog aggressive dogs and if I owned a Golden Retriever who was dog aggressive I would own a break stick too.

It’s not about the breed of dog here folks, it’s about the fact these things can and do happen and being prepared is the smart thing to do.

PS – Denial Kills. Understanding the Pit Bulls temperament is something every Pit Bull owner should have a firm grasp on.

3 Quick Tips to Help Homeless Pit Bulls

April 7th, 2005

American Pit Bull Terriers or Pit Bulls as they are often referred to are filling up shelters and rescues in staggering numbers.

Here are three quick ways to help homeless Pit Bulls and help these organizations fight the problem of overpopulation.

1. Donate Your Time, Money, Expertise

You can go down to the local shelter and take the dogs for a walk.

You could also donate some money to help rescue dogs get the food and care they need.

Finally you could donate your expertise.

If you know any thing about dogs, dog training or behavior you could help asses new dogs.

2. Become a Foster Mom/Dad for a Homeless Pit Bull

Becoming a foster parent to a homeless Pit Bull will relieve some of the pressure shelters and rescues face.

You can also help by training your foster dog. This will increase the dogs chances for adoption ten fold.

3. Adopt Instead of Buy

Adopting a rescue or shelter dog gives a dog that doesn’t have a chance at a normal life a real chance at being a happy and loyal family companion.

These three tips are a starting point for those who would like to do something about the Pit Bull problem of overpopulation.

Canada’s Pit Bull Ban – Have Canadians Lost Their Minds Too?

April 6th, 2005

Canadians have been emailing me like crazy ever since the proposed Pit Bull ban hit Parliment.

I have three things to say about breed bans:

1. They don’t work.

Miami Florida banned Pit Bulls in the 1980’s. Yet you still see them every single day on Animals Cops Miami.

Just this morning I was reading State of Florida v. Peters
. A 1988 case concerning North Miami and their attempts to ban ownership of Pit Bulls.

People think BSL is a new problem. Folks, this has been brewing for years!

2. Personal Responsiblity.

A thing of the past? Everyday I see people do things that if I would have done 10 years ago I would have been arrested!

Kids have no respect. Parents have no clue. Our society as a whole as lost most its morals and don’t even get me started about common sense.

How can we expect someone to be a responsible dog owner when they can’t even be responsible about their own children?

Simply put, people don’t care about anything but themselves.

While this has always been the case today it’s worse than ever.

3. Goverment officials have their heads stuck up their…
[I think you get the idea here]

Point Michael Bryant to this blog and ask him to read this:

To those goverment officials in charge of making stupid laws. Please, for gods sake, address the hard core criminals who kill and rape on a daily basis and are let go even when they are found guilty. Before making a responsible, productive citizen pay $100,000 for insurance on their American Pit Bull Terrier or mix.

Am I wrong here? Are my values backwards?

When is it okay to tell a law abiding, tax paying citizen they have to pay for their dog when their dogs have done
nothing to bring this tyranny upon them?

My proposal?

Stop the:

A. Irresponsible owners

B. Irresponsible breeders who pump out hundreds of thousands of dogs every year

C. Criminals who own them.

D. Associations that register anything for a price. Yes, I’m talking to you ADBA, UKC, AKC, and all the pop up registeries out there. They do more damage than any irresponsible owner every thought about doing.

Not to mention why haven’t they started to put their money in the pot to fight BSL?

With the registration money they make they could hire a building full of lawyers to fight BSL in America. Yet, they sit silently by and watch as we, the people who truly love the breed, lose ground everyday.

While I think this is problem can be fixed. A lot of work will be needed to make it happen.

Don’t give up because you think it’s “too big” to deal with. It’s not. People make the laws. People change them. Without your voice? Nothing happens. Think about that.

Have a great day and keep your tail wagging.
