Pit Bull Puppies and Breeders
June 30th, 2005
I usually receive at least one email a week that goes something like this, “Jason, I love your site and I really appreciate the stance you take against breeding Pit Bulls. I hate to ask, but are you seriously committed to this or are you just playing favorites?”
At first I took offense to the question. But then again this is the Internet and I have seen people say one thing and in reality they believe the opposite of what they say here online.
I answer questions like this with a resounding, NO it’s not front and I’m not playing favorites.
Recently I received an email asking me for breeding information.
While I won’t post the email for privacy reasons I will give you a brief explanation.
A lady emailed me wanting to know more about breeding her male because she wanted to have “one” pup to give to a friend of hers. She made no mention of the other puppies or anything else.
This “one” pup was the reason she wanted to breed her male Pit Bull.
My answer, this is quoted from the original email:
“Dear (Named removed for privacy reasons),
I do not endorse breeding Pit Bulls. Especially
because someone wants a gift. That is NOT a reason
to breed a dog.
You should seriously rethink your decision as
there are MILLIONS of “one litters” out there
that are in shelters that are being killed every
single day.
Seriously, I’m not against breeding Pit Bulls IF
you breed for the right reasons, which is to produce
a correct, sound, as close to perfect example of
the breed as you can get.
Other than that, well, as I said before I do not
endorse breeding dogs that are not almost perfect
examples of a proper Pit Bull.
Sorry but I do not have any information for you
about breeding.
Best Regards,

As a Pit Bull enthusiast I take this breed and the problems it faces
extremely serious. Breeding Pit Bulls is not a game.
When I get emails like the one asking about breeding information,
I ask myself, why are these people not seeing what I am seeing?
I also find it difficult to not give people information because I know they are more than likely dead set on breeding their dogs. And start to think that some quality information would be better than no information at all.
Then all I have to do is visit any rescue site on the web and I am instantly reminded of the problem and why people should not breed Pit Bulls unless they are going to take it serious and do it correctly and for the right reasons.
99.9% of the people breeding Pit Bulls today are not doing it for
the right reasons.
Me not giving this lady any information is hopefully a wake up
call to her. She might go somewhere else and ask them and call
me names and bad mouth me and the web site.
You know what?
So what. It’s okay.
Please, if you are thinking about breeding your dog(s) before you
do, take a hard look at what’s involved.
Your are responsible for every single puppy for their
entire lives.
Are you ready to do that? Are you willing to put your busy life on
hold and make sure every single puppy finds a high qualilty home
for life?
In the end, breeding is more than letting two dogs tie up. It’s
about producing as close to a perfect Pit Bull as you can and
that takes time, money, committment, love, responsibility,
and passion.
