Assume the Position…Criminalizing Pit Bull Owners

August 18th, 2008

The following was taken directly from a letter that the Humane Society of the United States wrote to the Louisville, Ky city council on July 5th, 2006.

Pit bulls – There is no doubt that pit bulls are in bad shape in America right now. They are
likely the most popular dog in the country, but unfortunately, they are also the dogs of choice
for drug dealers, gang members, and anyone else who is looking for a dog to be a status symbol.

Call me crazy but that is a bit of a stretch. I choose this breed. I guess I’m a drug dealer, a gang member, or I want a status symbol. Funny, I thought I was a dog lover and a breed fancier.

How does this affect you and I as Pit Bull owners? When people read that enough they start to assume these dogs are in fact the choice of drug dealers etc… Now they start to wonder, “Hmmm. Jason has two Pit Bulls, I wonder what he does for a living.”

So in short they make me out to be a criminal in the eyes of the ignorant.

People are bathed in a message in order for it to sink in. It’s called, “Branding” and advertising agencies use it to influence your choices. Want a Coke? A Pepsi? What about a Budweiser? These companies are masters at getting their products in front of you. Whether it be in a movie scene or the super bowl or repetitive commercials on your favorite channels you are influenced by these ads whether you think so or not.

The HSUS, PETA, and other anti-pit bull organizations put this statement in as many publications as they can in order to “brand” people’s minds with the message. Soon, the statement becomes ONLY drug dealers and criminals have Pit Bulls.

Think I’m making this up? Find 10-20 people, dog owners or not, doesn’t matter really, and ask them, “who owns Pit Bulls?”

I would bet dollar doughnuts the majority answer, drug dealers, gang members, thugs, wanna be dog fighters, or some other criminal element.

For those people reading this that are anti-pit bull I would ask that you take a step back for a second and think about three things.

1. If Pit Bulls were so dangerous why don’t we see a fatal attack daily? We don’t. Yet they are one of the most popular types of dogs in America. The Labrador being the most popular.

2. If Pit Bull owners were all criminals then how do you explain the thousands of people that visit my web site that are Police officers, teachers, legislators, judges, lawyers, doctors, etc..?

3. Pit Bulls are dogs. Dogs are bred, raised, and their temperament is developed through those two situations. Any dog and I do mean ANY dog can bite and kill. Just ask the family who’s Pomeranian killed their baby.

We demonize those things we do not understand and fear is the root cause of all these anti-pit bull stances people take. Not a single fact is presented to support the growing cry of these people that Pit Bulls are inherently dangerous.

Not a single fact.
