Discrimination – Pit Bull Owners Face it Daily

November 6th, 2008

Discrimination is a real problem within the Pit Bull community.

People often over look the details of discrimination. There are Pit Bull owners that walk their dogs before the sun rises or extremely late at night because they are afraid of discrimination. They are afraid of people who spit, throw coke cans at them, poor hot coffee on them and well, I think you get the point.

Never before in the history of dog ownership have a group of people been so widely discriminated against than Pit Bull owners.

Laws that are put into place to target Pit Bulls are, in my opinion, directly used to discriminate against the owners of Pit Bulls or Pit Bull type dogs.

The Humane Society of the United States as publicly stated on many occasions that Pit Bulls are “the dogs of choice for drug dealers, gang members, and anyone else who is looking for a dog to be a status symbol.”

For over forty years they have been telling the general public that “rednecks and dog fighters” have Pit Bulls and now they add “drug dealers and gang members” to the description.

What does this do? It paints a picture to show people that (A) only criminals or people looking to use a dog as a status symbol own Pit Bulls or Pit Bull type dogs and (B) it teaches discrimination based on a breed or type of dog.

I am often told how people “hate that people discriminate against a breed of dog.” My response to their comments is the same every time, it is not the breed of dog being discriminated against, it is the owner of the dog that is being discriminated against.

Take a long hard look at the words being used in conjunction with Pit Bull ownership.

Drug dealer, gang member, redneck, dog fighter, someone seeking a status symbol.

These words are used for a purpose. To make you look like one of those people.

We use this tactic in warfare all the time. After all when the enemy is “less than you” it is easier to kill them and do your job as a soldier. We demonize the enemy and we use that to train our troops that killing, when for a great cause, is righteous. However to make it even easier we degrade the enemy, make them appear evil, make them appear like lower life forms, then we can do the work of war.

The HSUS is using this same battlefield tactic against Pit Bull owners. They demonize our dogs and make us look like dangerous criminals who only want a status symbol or a “weapon” on a leash. Then, when it comes time to pass an illegal law against Pit Bull owners the general public (having been completely hoodwinked) bites hook, line and sinker and supports the law.

Make no mistake my friend, you are the target not your dog.

I have said it before and I will say it again, the HSUS is a radical, animal rights organization that wants nothing more than to kill your dog and make you a criminal by putting illegal lawsin place and falsely accusing you of crimes like dog fighting.

Hundreds of people have lost their dogs because the HSUS lied about them and the authorities swoop in and illegal take their dogs and then kill them before any proof has been shown on behalf of that person.

Just ask Floyd Bordeoux. His dogs were seized and killed and there was not a single shred of proof to prove the HSUS and law enforcements claims he was fighting his dogs. Yet, they stole his dogs and immediately killed them. Including the puppies!

Regardless how you feel about Mr. Bordeoux you should be outraged.

Outraged!

The Pit Bull Problem – What if the tables were turned?

September 25th, 2008

In my last post I was at a Dock Dog Jumping contest. It was cool. Most of the dogs competiting were Labradors. I was watching these owners enjoying their dogs. I was the only one there with a Pit Bull. It ticked me off.

First, why was I the only one there? Sure, Pit Bulls are not all water dogs. But there was more to the event. Not to mention that I personally told several Pit Bull owners about the event. No one showed. Ummm….

Second, as I watched these dogs having a blast jumping off the dock for their favorite toy I thought what if the tables were turned. What if it were Labradors that were being demonized in the press, banned from entire cities, regulated in entire states, what would Labrador owners do?

Before you say, “That would never happen.” I’m sure someone said the same thing about the American Pit Bull Terrier and other related bully breeds that are often called, “pit bulls.”

So what would they do? How would they feel if their dogs were not welcome in places like Denver and Miami. What if they couldn’t go to certain events because “bully breeds” were not allowed to go?

What if people were coming and ripping your best friend from your home for no reason other than they are a certain breed of dog! Your dog never hurt a fly, yet, they are put to sleep because they are Labradors or Golden Retrievers or whatever.

When people say, “Pit Bulls are vicious and they should all be killed!” I say, “You’re an ignorant fool that needs to stop being a sheep and following the rest of the ignorant people.”

Time for this bashing, banning, and ignorance is at an end. Wake up. Your dog is next and if you don’t believe me grab a breed ban list from Denver or Miami. There are more than Pit Bulls on that list.

Ask people in Italy who can not own Border Collies because they are banned.

Ask people in Germany, who were put through pure hell having their dogs set on fire, why? Because they were bully breeds.

My friends, wake up.

People like to comment on here. But until you walk a mile in my shoes, shut up.

As for anyone who asks, “Why don’t you just get another breed.” My answer, “Why don’t you.”

I hope one day you don’t have to go through what Pit Bull owners are going through right now. It’s pathetic, cowardly, it doesn’t work, and it’s based entirely on fear.

Pit Bulls, No Kill Shelters, and You

July 3rd, 2008

Editor’s note:  Before you read further understand I am not saying all no-kill shelters are horrible, doggy warehouses. There are proper no-kill shelters out there and it is hard to write anything bad about them but on that same note, I will not stand back and let those who are obviously missing the point of no-kill put dogs that should not be adopted out into homes.

My point is simple – Unstable animals should not be available for adoption.

Original post:
A few posts back I said I was going to share with you how no-kill shelters are foolish and are doing more harm than good for Pit Bull Terriers and us, the owners.

It’s late so I’ll jump right to the point…

No-kill shelters, while a novel idea, are nothing more than warehouses for dogs. Think of it like Sams Club, Costco, or any huge outlet store like that. They take the dogs, put them in cages, then let them sit and rot for years while “the perfect home” is found.

Is that any life for a Pit Bull? Really, be honest with yourself. Would you want your Pit Bull Terrier living like that?

Now, let’s get to the thing that really chaps my rear a bright shiny red.

More times than not the folks who operate and/or work in no-kill facilities are people who believe they can save every single dog out there and that is why they are at a no-kill facility in the first place.

I have dealt with a few no-kill shelters and helped a few evaluate dogs (Pit Bulls included) and frankly I was shocked at their behavior and attitudes. After dealing with them I did a little leg work by calling no-kill shelters around the nation and found out from people through emails about their own personal experiences in these places.

The mentality that you can save them all is flawed for one reason, you can’t.

Ever see a hyper, human aggressive dog that tries to bite you just for being there? I have. I also watched as shelter directors all agreed (against my wishes and the wishes of 5 other trainers in the room) to adopt this dog out to a family with kids.

Shocking right?

I have seen this happen more than once and I was disgusted with the people who allowed these dogs to be adopted to families and other unsuspecting homes.

Shelters and rescues are not the end all be all of the dog world as many would have you believe. Yes, great shelter dogs and rescue dogs are out there. Pit Bulls that make life long loving companions come from these places.

My gripe is not with the dogs, it is with the people who run these facilities. I call them God Factories. Why? Because people get a sense of playing God when they have the power to “save a life” that otherwise would not be saved.

This creates a situation where people are unwilling to see reality and logic. They will go to great lengths to try and “make the dog good.” Fooling themselves and unsuspecting potential adopters into believing that with the “right owner and handling” these dogs will be fine in their homes. Sadly this can have devastating consequences.

I have heard more than one story about dogs being adopted out that end up hurting people and in one case even killing an adopter. Though the shelter that did this was not a no-kill facility the point here is, it can and does happen. I couldn’t imagine knowing my family member was killed by a dog that should have been put to sleep.

I know not all rescue or shelter organizations are horrible but the idea of no-kill allows many dogs that are unstable to either rot in a cage or possibly hurt someone.

At the very least no-kill facilities should wake up to the reality of the situation. We can not adopt out dogs that have unstable temperaments.

There are to many good dogs out there and many of them do not get a fair shake at life because some unsound man-biter is taking up the space that could house the good animals.

If you work in a no-kill facility take a look around and see what kind of dogs are being housed and adopted out. What are the operating procedures if the dog poses a risk to potential adopters? How are man aggressive Pit Bull Terriers handled?

If these dogs are allowed to leave the facility or are warehoused like a bunch of light bulbs in a factory are you really helping the dogs? More to the point, are you helping people who are adopting these animals?

Pit Bull Owners Compared to Nazi’s…

July 3rd, 2008

Holy cat litter Batman. You know I have seen some ignorant comments in my life time regarding us Pit Bull owners but I have to say this one takes a ranking in my all time top 5 most ignorant comments to date.

The comment was posted on a newsite about a Pit Bull attack that occured on July 2nd this year. Here is the comment…

Euthanize all Pit Bulls and Rottweilers Now. Let’s legislate against ownership of these two breeds. And keep track of the owners just in case they get another. It may not be fair to everyone but will saves lives of future victums. (For some reason the owners don’t seem to care – not enough to secure their animals). “Hitler, A Study in Tyranny”, said it most eloquently, “The gutter had come to power”. At the time, he of course was referring to the Nazis, today it’s these owners of Pit Bulls and BMW’s who earn such comments.”

All I can say to that is, wow.

Imagine if that was your neighbor? Yes, two Pit Bulls did in fact critically wound a 90 year old man the other day but, and I say this with all due respect to the man, how did it happen? Was it owner neglect? Were the dogs unsound? Did they have a history? These things we don’t know but I guarantee you one thing I do know, it will take about 10 seconds for the local government to start with plans to ban these dogs.

The attack happened in Staten Island so if you are around that area stay tuned because I guarantee you will be hearing about possible bans and restrictions. Peter Vallone, The Police Chief said, “Do something about Pit bulls” already so, here we go folks.

Sad, flipping sad.
