Jason's Corner:
Thoughts about My Life with American Pit Bull Terriers

Date: July 20th 2008
From: Jason Mann

Recently I sat down and thought about my life with dogs. Why did I choose the American Pit Bull Terrier as my breed, or, did the breed choose me. Funny how that works sometimes. We think we are choosing something but who is to say it was not fate, destiny, karma, whatever you want to call it, choosing us.

Why make dog training my career? In 2006 I started my dog training company, Top Dog K9 Training Solutions. Which took me out of my comfort zone of working Pit Bull Terriers into working with many different breeds. I started out with Angel, then Honey, then I started helping local Pit Bull owners, then I started helping rescues, I guess doing it for a living was a logical evolution.

Now, at 33 years old, I am reflecting on my life with dogs. Specifically the American Pit Bull Terrier. I do not regret having the breed in my house, I do not regret opening my dog training company, and I certainly do not regret caring for dogs as much as I do.

I guess the big question I have is, where will I be in 10 years. When I'm 43 years old. Where will my beloved American Pit Bull Terrier's be? I pray I will be alive and well. I pray the dogs will still be here and I will have a few good old bulldogs (aka American Pit Bull Terriers) by my side. I also wish with all my heart people would stop trying to destroy these dogs. Whatever way they are doing it, over breeding, breeding away from temperament and conformation, banning them, restricting them, trying to eradicate through mandatory spay/neuter laws, whatever the weapon they choose doesn't matter. I wish they would stop.

You may know that I am a fiery, opinionated, very outspoken, Pit Bull lover. You may know that each day is filled with 5-8 hours of working with American Pit Bull Terriers, other breeds, answering mountains of questions regarding just about every aspect of our breed and dogs in general, and you may know that I am passionate about what I do. What you may not know is how heavy my heart is on a daily basis. Why I lose sleep at night thinking about the possible future of our breed. Why I can not think about my dog Angel getting old without a tear forming in my eye.

I love my dogs, I love my breed, I love my job, and I love my life. I'll be damned if someone is going to try and take that away from me. I, like my breed, do not know the meaning of "quit." God willing I'll be here in 10 years, will you?

Working Pit Bulls
Why Pit Bulls are Top Dogs

When I was first introduced to the breed I had no idea how dynamic they were as working dogs. I, like many people, really didn't know what a Pit Bull was and couldn't pick on out of a line up if asked. After 9 years in the breed that has changed. My perception of the breed has also changed.

The core of a Pit Bull is their courage.

Courage, a word often over used to describe mediocre acts of responsibility in humans. Courage in regards to Pit Bull Terriers is not often used to describe them. They are often described as "land shark", "devil dog", or "baby killer." We don't see courage used with their names very often but when we do we understand.

Pit Bulls dominant the canine world in sports and work because they have courage. Courage to continue past the breaking point. When a line is drawn in the sand that says, "stop, you are in danger" they step over it without hesitation. This, above all, is the trait I admire most in American Pit Bull Terriers.

Whether you see a dog competing in agility, rally obedience, stock work, hunting, drug/bomb detection, or protection sports you can rest assured the dog is going to give it their all 110% of the time. When their owners ask for that little extra effort they will give it.

In the end, Pit Bulls are working dogs first, pets second. While many people may disagree with that statement it is a fact. Pit Bulls were not bred to sit idle by their owner's feet. They were bred for hard work that other canine's were not able to do. They were bred to face each other in combat and fight, many times, to the death.

Why? Because they have courage. They will face the challenge and they will do what is asked of them because they desire to please their owners. In my mind this is both a curse and a blessing. The curse being they will do things for irresponsible, cruel, people that only exploit their courage and athletic ability. A blessing because they are more dog than most dogs could ever be.

I think Pit Bulls are top dogs because they have more to give. Their desire to please and their courage combines to create a force that no other canine out there can offer. Put a task in front of a Pit Bull and show them what you want them to do, I would bet my left arm they will do it and often times they will do it better than the breed that was created to do that task.

In recent years Pit Bulls have started to enter the mainstream world of dog sports. They are routinely being used as therapy dogs, service dogs, and K9 police dogs. While the public may not ever accept them in these roles, they are ruling the roost and they will continue to do so for years to come.

Calling All Pit Bull Owners:
Call to Action...

I would like to talk to you about breed specific laws. First I would like to define what I think breed specific laws are.

A breed specific law is any law that targets dogs based on breed.

Many people associate breed specific laws with bans. There are many types of these laws out there and all of them are designed to do two things.

Destroy a breed and remove your rights.

Some of these laws are sneaky and they try to back door their way onto the books. Take mandatory spay/neuter laws for Pit Bulls as an example. Some Pit Bull owners would argue this is a good thing. Spay/neuter would solve a lot of the shelter problems and irresponsible breeding right? No. Responsible owners already spay/neuter dogs they are not going to breed. Shelters across the nation usually spay/neuter the dogs before they are sent to their new homes. So how does this help? It doesn't.

Spay/neuter laws are a back door breed specific law that is easily passed. People are lead to believe these laws are helpful because they would restrict the amount of dogs being born. If you think about that for a second this is not the case. As I already mentioned, if you are responsible you have already taken care of this.

These laws are designed to do one thing. Eradicate the Pit Bull.

Pit Bull owners need to take action before these laws take root in your community. You might already have laws like this in your community. If you do, then fighting them on a legal level is highly recommended. You can contact the American Canine Foundation and get legal advice by going to their web site here.

If these laws have not taken root in your community you can get a head start and make sure they never do by getting your copy of the Pit Bull Owners Survival Guide by B. Haywood. Her e-book has a ton of valuable resources and top notch advice for stopping and fighting breed specific laws. I refer to this book almost daily when people ask me for advice on how to fight these laws. I highly encourage every Pit Bull owner to get a copy as soon as they can.

What can you do right now? Get other dog owners together and start taking a stand against it by voting anti-dog legislators out of office and pro-dog legislators into office. When I say dog owners I mean owners of all breeds. Not just Pit Bull owners. These people will also be affected if these laws are not stopped. They should be made aware of them

Get your dog out there and start showing people what Pit Bulls are all about. This, along with gathering local dog owners are two of the most powerful tools you have in fighting these breed specific laws. They are also easy to get started. Go outside and talk to people and take your well mannered Pit Bull with you. Pretty simple.

Whatever you do don't sit back and act like nothing is going on or that these laws will not affect you. Don't take the Ostrich approach and stick your head in the sand only to get bitten in the butt. Take action today.
