Editors Corner:
The American Pit Bull Terrier
Date: October 2007

The American Pit Bull Terrier. A dog of wonders. Filled with courage, love, and tenderness. Yet so misunderstood as a villian to be
feared and hated. The American Pit Bull Terrier is not easily summed up with a few words. We who love them love them for who they are
and what they bring into our lives know better than to cast our judgements upon them. When people leave, they stay. We people hate, they love. When people hurt us, they heal us. When people hurt them, they take it with a grain of salt and continue to love without question.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is a familiar friend. A friend who will not let you down when the world around you is falling apart. A friend who is there when you are happy. A friend that is there when you sad. The American Pit Bull Terrier is by far the greatest breed of dog in the world. Yes, some would disagree with that statement but that is their loss. For those who dislike our breed will never fully appreciate the American Pit Bull Terrier.
Am I crazy to care for a dog as much as I do? I don't think so. I think that my dogs are one of my greatest teachers in life. They teach me how to be a better man. I have my faults. I have my failures. I have my quirks. I am after all, human. The dogs on the other hand show me how to love without question. They show me that to have courage in the face of fear is character. Character that sadly many people lack. My dogs show me that while I can be angry and hateful they will still seek me out for attention. This above all else reminds me that they will never let me down. They will never hold it against me that I am who I am. They will love me and
want to spend time with me no matter how bad or good my day was, how much money I make, what I do for a living, what kind of car I drive, what clothes I wear, or
what I look like.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed of dog that does not deserve the hate, the fear, and the ignorance they face. They deserve to be honored and paid respect too.
Pay your dog some respect today. They deserve it.

Pit Bull Training Tip of the Month:
The Secret Method of Professional Dog Trainers
If you were expecting some big secret tip I hate to disappoint you but one does not exist. Dog trainers work hard to be consistent and
to stick to their plan with each dog they work with. Even if you have more than one dog you have it easier than dog trainers who deal with
dozens of different dogs and personality types (humans included).
What makes a professional dog trainer different from you? Experience, education, and experience. The one positive about dealing with so many
different dogs and personality types is they gain valuable experience. I know in my career I am constantly learning from the dogs (and people)
that I work with. You can't buy this experience, you have to put in the work to gain it.
When I am working with a new trainer-in-training the four most important things I teach them are, Motiviation, focus, timing, and consistency. They flow
in that order. You have to motivate your dog in order to get them to focus. You have to have great timing in order to teach them what you want them to learn
and you have to be consistent to make sure they learn and continue to be reliable under different situations.
Daily practice of these four things is needed in order to maintain a great relationship with your dog. Now that I think about it, I guess there is a secret
method professional dog trainers use to train dogs. It's sticking to these four keys and making sure they are well versed in the techniques they have decided to
use. If you use a prong collar and leash corrections be sure to learn the correct and humane way to use those tools. If you use positive motivational methods
then make sure you learn how to use those techniques correctly. Even if you use a shock collar you need to be well versed in the use of that tool by a
professional who uses them properly. What ever method you use those four criteria apply equally.
Training your dog is a life long endeavour that will enhance the human/canine relationship. Do not rush it. Do not expect great things from your dog
because you "think" they are capable of great things. Get them motivated, keep them focused, work on your timing, and be consistent and you will see
results over the long haul.
